 Em referência à saúde e à doença, como em todas as coisas que dizem respeito às pessoas, o assunto não deve ser entendido como se tratasse simplesmente de "punição" e "recompensa" pelo que o homem fez no passado ou talvez até nesta vida. Por exemplo, a pessoa pode ser afetada por uma doença para a qual nenhuma causa pode ser identificada, nem na vida anterior ou na vida atual. Então a doença ocorre no sentido como sendo o primeiro evento no ciclo de vida da pessoa, é em si mesma a primeira causa. Trará então com seus efeitos de alguma forma, no próximo curso da vida. A lei do karma certamente trabalha em qualquer lugar. No entanto, o indivíduo não deve acreditar que se tem apenas efeitos dos quais as causas residem no passado. O indivíduo deve também lidar com as causas, das quais os efeitos residirão no futuro.

With regard to health and illness, as in all things that concern people, the matter should not be understood as if they were simply “punishment” and “reward” for what man has done in a past or perhaps even in this life.  For example, a person may be affected by a disease for which no cause can be identified, either in the previous or in the current life. Then the disease occurs in a sense as the first event in a person’s life cycle, it is itself a first cause. It will then bring with it its effects in some way in the next course of life. The law of karma certainly works everywhere; however, one should not believe that one has only effects of which the causes lie in the past; one can also have to deal with causes, of which the effects will lie in the future.

Nota da tradutora: Antes de Rudolf Steiner fundar a Ciência Espiritual/Antroposofia sob este nome, ele era o Presidente da Sociedade Teosófica, onde falava sem impedimentos sobre suas próprias pesquisas espirituais, até que a Sociedade Teosófica decidiu se encaminhar para outra direção, diferentemente de Steiner, afirmando que Jiddu Krishnamurti era a reencarnação de Cristo, ao que Steiner se opôs totalmente.

“Atuando na Sociedade Teosófica, acabou por tornar-se seu Secretário-Geral na Alemanha, tendo combinado que ele iria trazer essencialmente seus próprios resultados da pesquisa espiritual. Ainda antes do fim da primeira década começou a entrar em choque com os dirigentes dessa Sociedade, que haviam abraçado uma corrente fortemente orientalista, e declarado que um jovem hindu, Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895-1986), era uma reencarnação do Cristo. Steiner opôs-se totalmente a essa ideia (mais tarde negada pelo próprio Krishnamurti), o que o levou a proferir alguns de seus ciclos de conferências mais importantes, sobre os Evangelhos - todos publicados no Brasil pela Editora Antroposófica https://www.antroposofica.com.br/. O choque daí resultante levou em 1913 à sua separação da Sociedade Teosófica; vários membros da mesma seguiram-no, tendo sido fundada uma primeira Sociedade Antroposófica (a palavra antroposofia já havia sido empregada antes por alguns filósofos e por ele próprio, por exemplo como título de palestra proferida por ele no mesmo dia em que assumiu a secretaria geral da Sociedade Teosófica Alemã). Daí em diante, o movimento antroposófico cresceu, tendo culminado com a construção de sua sede em Dornach, na Suíça, em um prédio de madeira que ele denominou de Goetheanum (veja no link abaixo uma foto dele), construído durante a 1a. guerra mundial, e que era uma verdadeira obra de arte. Aliás, foi Steiner que introduziu nos congressos do movimento teosófico atividades e apresentações artísticas, que passaram a constituir parte essencial de todo o movimento antroposófico.
