Brasil já era conhecido pelos fenícios, gregos, vikings e celtas irlandeses. Estes, inclusive, denominavam Hy Breazil ou "descendentes do vermelho-pau-brasil" (referência ao vermelho do pau-brasil). Eschenbach, autor do livro Parsifal, escrito em 1200, na Idade-Média (portanto, antes de Cabral), cita literalmente o "pau-brasil". Segundo antiga lenda, o corpo do rei Arthur teria sido transladado à "Ilha Afortunada", situada no ocidente extremo, "lá onde o sol se põe"... Talvez isso possa justificar a inspiração que vive nos corações brasileiros: "Brasil, país do futuro".
